New York Mills
A small, rural community rich with Finnish heritage. The first Finnish settlers arrived in 1874. The influence of their culture can still be seen with the Finnish flag flying in Central Park, homes containing saunas, and a local summer festival celebrating all things Finn!
The most well-known business in town, started in 1950, is Lund Boat Company, now Brunswick New York Mills Operation, which is also the largest employer. Lund boats are sold worldwide and used by many of fishing’s top pros, as well as the majority of locals out on the plentiful area lakes or rivers.
At its heart, New York Mills is a traditional small town. You can still buy your groceries, prescriptions, and flowers locally. The lumber yard and hardware store are also available when you have a building or fix-up project to get done. If it's a local brew or woodfired pizza, you're craving? Well, we've got you covered there, too!
The outdoor community pool, plentiful local parks, and ice skating rinks provide wholesome, small-town opportunities for the youth of New York Mills. The many community events, from the Easter Egg Hunt to the Lund Mania Fishing Tournament and celebration, sponsored by the Civic & Commerce Association, provide fun, food, and always something for all ages.
New York Mills also has great support for the local school. Sporting events, music concerts, and other school occasions, including the successful Community Carnival to raise funds for the school, are well attended by community members. The heart of a community is often its school, and New York Mills puts great pride in the school system.
Other local educational opportunities are provided by the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, a unique gem, drawing from a regional and national level, bringing quality cultural and artistic programming to the area. Photographers, songwriters, puppeteers, authors, and more have all displayed their awesome talents in our small town.
History & Philosophy
Farmers & Merchants State Bank is a local bank serving our community’s financial needs with quality products and services. We are committed to exceeding our customers’ expectations with our friendly and professional staff. As a local, independent bank, we do not offer risky products, and we pride ourselves on knowing our customers and treating them as individuals, not a number. Our decisions are all made locally, not shuttled off to a head office somewhere down the road. We are your neighbors, and we know you!
We want to see our local economy thrive! We help local businesses, farmers, groups and individuals realize their dreams, enabling New York Mills to stay a vibrant small town.
Banks are often in a position to invest both dollars and effort in the local community, and F&M State Bank strongly believes in helping our town grow and succeed! We encourage the volunteer efforts of individual employees and often dedicate our services and time to community events and groups. We have a strong presence in our local Civic & Commerce Association and our employees are often leaders in the efforts to put on community events. In addition, our employees serve on a wide variety of boards and committees, including our Volunteer Fire Department.
We also believe in educating youth about financial matters and careers in banking. We proudly participate in the elementary school's Adopt-A-Class Program, and we provide fun and education to our 3rd-grade students each year. We also hire a high school summer intern who is often looking toward a career in banking or finance. Some of our elementary and high school teachers also use our sponsored Financial Literacy Program, which educates students on the everyday money matters they'll need to know in life. Another way we enjoy connecting with our students is by speaking to high school classes about financial topics and careers, as well as putting on an annual "Reality Fair" with real-life career and financial scenarios for juniors and seniors.
